This superbly hand decorated Trojan War theme chess set captures the true spirit of this famous war and depicts many of the main characters.
The Trojan War has its roots in the marriage between Peleus and Thetis, a seaogoddess. Following the intervention by Eris, the goddess of discord, who had not been invited to the wedding, a golden apple was thrown on to the table and was promised to the fairest.
Hera, Athena and Aphrodite competed for the apple and Zeus proclaimed tha Paris, Prince of Troy, would act as the Judge. Aphrodite was chosen and she, in turn, promised Paris that Helen, wife of Menelaus, wouuld be his wife. Paris then set off for Sparta to claim his bride. They were married around 1200 BC. Menelaus, who wasthe brother of Agamemnon, was outraged and gathered support from Helen's former suitors who had sworn an oath to defend her. In addition, Agamemnon, King of Mycenae, brought 100 ships to help and became commander in chief of the Greek forces. Odysseus and Achilles were enlisted to help sfter much persuasion.
The war culmintaed with the fall of Troy, following the ingenious plan of Odysseus of building a wooden horse and filling it with Greek soldiers led by him. The horse was taken within the walls of Troy, allowing the soldiers to escape and open the gatesfor the Greek army to enter.
